How do I apply for a provisional permit?

To apply for a provisional permit in California, students must be between 15½ and 17½ years old.

Steps:

  1. Register for a Driver Education course online. Go to any online driver education school. Google search it
  2. Complete the Driver Education course.
  3. Receive your Certificate of Completion of Driver Education by mail from the online driver education school.
  4. Go to the DMV and pass the written permit test.
  5. Sign up for 6 hours of Behind-the-Wheel Training with Hi Driving School
  6. Complete all 3 driving lessons and receive your 6-Hour Behind-the-Wheel Training Certificate.
  7. Practice driving with a parent or licensed California driver age 25 or older for 50 hours over at least 6 months.
  8. Return to the DMV and pass the driving test to receive your driver’s license.

How many hours are required to obtain the Behind-the-Wheel Training Certificate?

California DMV requires teenagers to complete 6 hours of actual behind-the-wheel driving instruction.

  • Training may not exceed 2 hours per day.
  • Observation time does not count toward the required 6 hours.

How long does it take to complete the Behind-the-Wheel Training Program?

We recommend completing all 3 lessons as soon as possible.

Students may complete training:

  • In 3 consecutive days
  • Within 1 week
  • Over 2–3 weeks
  • Over several months

After the first lesson, students may legally practice with a parent or licensed California driver age 25 or older. For safety, we recommend completing at least 2 lessons before practicing independently.

How long is a typical driving lesson?

All driving lessons are 2 hours long.

  • No 1-hour appointments
  • No split appointments

Can I pay online after scheduling?

I have a Groupon voucher from Hi Driving School. How do I get started?
  1. Schedule your lesson at Hi Driving School
  2. You may schedule one lesson or all lessons.
  3. Include your Groupon redemption number in the scheduling textbox.
  4. You may also text a screenshot of your voucher after booking.

Can I replace my 6-Hour Training Certificate if I lose it?

Yes. Replacement certificates are available for a $30 fee.

We recommend keeping your certificate attached to your instruction permit or stored safely in a folder or plastic sleeve.

Can I cancel my appointment?

Yes.

Please cancel at least 24–48 hours before your scheduled appointment.

Cancellation Fees:

  • Less than 24-hour notice: $30 fee
  • Same-day cancellation: $50–$75 fee

Please plan ahead so we can offer the appointment time to another student.

Do Behind-the-Wheel packages expire?

Yes. All packages expire 6 months from the date of purchase.

Does Hi Driving School have specific training routes?

No. Students will drive in various real-world traffic environments throughout the local area.

What type of vehicles are used for training?

All Hi Driving School vehicles:

  • Are equipped with dual-control brakes
  • Include additional rear-view mirrors for instructors
  • Receive yearly safety inspections

Are the training vehicles insured?

Yes. Hi Driving School maintains the required bodily injury and property damage liability insurance on all training vehicles.

Can more than one teenager train in the vehicle at the same time?

No.

Only the student actively controlling the vehicle receives training credit.

Exception: Adult students may train together.

Can parents ride along during driving lessons?

No.

For insurance and safety reasons, unregistered passengers are not allowed in training vehicles. This includes:

  • Parents
  • Friends
  • Family members
  • Children
  • Non-students

Can I request a female driving instructor?

Currently, Hi Driving School does not have a female instructor.

Is there a transportation fee?

A transportation fee may apply if you live more than 15 miles from the Hi Driving School office:

Can I schedule multiple appointments at once?

Yes.

  • Package students may schedule multiple appointments at one time.
  • Cash-paying students may be limited to one to two online appointments until payment is received.

What is the refund policy?

Refunds are subject to:

  • A $50 non-refundable booking fee
  • Deduction of completed lessons at individual lesson pricing
  • Online payment processing fees, if applicable
